How to Build a 6-Month MCAT Study Schedule (2025 Template)

The “Phase” Approach

Most students fail because they try to do everything at once. You cannot learn Physics while taking full-length practice exams while doing flashcards.

The best way to study for the MCAT is to break it down into three distinct phases.

Phase 1: Content Review (Months 1-3)

Goal: Re-learn the science you forgot since freshman year.

  • Resource: Kaplan Books or Princeton Review Books.
  • Action: Read 2 chapters per day.
  • Supplement: Watch videos (Khan Academy or Blueprint) for topics you don’t understand.
  • Anki: Create flashcards for every bolded term you encounter. Do your Anki reviews every single morning.
  • Practice: Do the discrete practice questions at the end of each chapter. Do NOT use UWorld yet.

Phase 2: Practice & Application (Months 3-5)

Goal: Learn how to apply your knowledge to MCAT-style questions.

  • Resource: UWorld QBank.
  • Action: Do 40-60 questions per day in “Timed, Tutor Mode.”
  • Review: Spend 2x as much time reviewing the explanations as you did taking the questions. This is where the real learning happens.
  • CARS: Do 1-2 CARS passages every single day. CARS is a skill, not a subject; it requires daily practice.

Phase 3: Mastery & Stamina (Month 6)

Goal: Build the stamina to sit for a 7.5-hour exam.

  • Resource: AAMC Official Materials.
  • Action: Take one full-length AAMC practice exam every Saturday.
  • Review: Spend Sunday reviewing every single question (right and wrong) from the exam.
  • Weekdays: Use the AAMC Section Bank to drill the hardest questions.

Common Mistakes

  1. Skipping CARS: You cannot cram for CARS. Start on Day 1.
  2. Hoarding Practice Tests: Don’t save all your tests for the last week. You need time to review them and fix your mistakes.
  3. Passive Reading: Don’t just highlight the book. Active recall (Anki) and practice questions (UWorld) are far more effective.
