CPA Evolution (2025): Understanding the Core + Discipline Model
The Biggest Change in Decades
The “CPA Evolution” initiative has completely transformed the CPA Exam. The old 4-part exam (FAR, AUD, REG, BEC) is dead.
In its place is a new Core + Discipline model designed to reflect the specialized nature of modern accounting.
The New Structure
You must pass three Core exams and one Discipline exam.
1. The Core (Mandatory)
Every candidate must pass these three sections. They cover the foundational knowledge required of all CPAs.
- FAR (Financial Accounting and Reporting): The “beast” remains. It covers GAAP, financial statements, and non-profit accounting.
- AUD (Auditing and Attestation): Covers ethics, audit reports, and internal controls.
- REG (Regulation): Covers US tax law and business law.
2. The Disciplines (Choose One)
The old BEC (Business Environment and Concepts) section has been eliminated. Its content has been split into three new “Discipline” exams. You must choose one to pass.
-
BAR (Business Analysis and Reporting):
- Content: Advanced accounting, technical reporting, and data analytics.
- Best For: Candidates who loved FAR and want to work in technical accounting or financial reporting.
- Difficulty: Considered the hardest discipline (basically “FAR 2.0”).
-
ISC (Information Systems and Controls):
- Content: IT governance, data security, and SOC reports.
- Best For: Candidates interested in IT audit or data assurance.
- Difficulty: Considered the “easiest” for tech-savvy students, but requires memorization.
-
TCP (Tax Compliance and Planning):
- Content: Advanced individual and entity tax planning.
- Best For: Candidates going into tax.
- Difficulty: A natural extension of REG. If you liked REG, take TCP.
Which Discipline Should You Choose?
This is the most common question for 2025 candidates.
| If you are good at… | And you want to work in… | Choose… |
|---|---|---|
| Financial Accounting | Audit / Technical Accounting | BAR |
| Technology / Systems | IT Audit / Risk Assurance | ISC |
| Tax Law | Tax | TCP |
Strategy Tip:
- Take REG and TCP back-to-back. The content overlaps significantly.
- Take FAR and BAR back-to-back. BAR builds directly on FAR concepts.
Does Your Discipline Matter for Your License?
No. Once you pass, you are a CPA. Your license does not say “CPA - Tax Specialist.” It just says “CPA.” You can take the ISC discipline and still work in Tax. Choose the discipline that gives you the best chance of passing.
